Azores - Terceira

Back in Terceira (remember, the flight to Sao Miguel, a few days ago ?).

Here is Furnas do Enxofre, a volcanic site where you can see everything covered with sulphur, and continuous gas and smoke.

Here is Algar do Carvao, an ancient lava tube, 90 meters deep.

And Gruta do Natal, the Christmas Cave, where you can walk (or crawl, sometimes) in a 700 meters loop.

The capital city of the island is Angra do Heroismo. It was established in the latter half of the 15th century.
Angra is the Portuguese word for "bay". The epithet do Heroísmo ("of Heroism") was granted to the city by Maria II to commemorate its citizens' successful defense of the island against an assault by supporters of the legitimacy of the king Miguel I of Portugal in 1829.

Here is the view on the neighbour island, Sao Jorge.

From the top of the Terceira crater, in the Serra de Santa Barbara, the view is supposed to be breathtaking, but this is what you get at the top...

Back on the coast, in Sao Mateus, where my hostel is located.
