Stewart Island

Look at that plane! This is the one I am going to board to fly to Stewart Island.
Never seen anything like this before!

And when we reach Stewart Island after a very spectacular flight, there is no airport, such an airstrip with a van waiting for us.

I am going to spend 2 days and a half walking around Halfmoon Bay, and discovering the local birds (plenty of kakas, specially, even if you won't see any pictures of them because I don't have any correct one) and the coastal sceneries.

That's Bunkers Backpackers and its deck.

The first walk leads me to Horseshoe Bay

This is Dead Man Beach. Yes, an interesting name, for sure...

And the famous Horseshoe Bay, at the end of the walk.

Time to head up to Golden Bay and Deep Bay.

Local blue cod for dinner. Yummy...

Next morning, up to Acker's Point and its lighthouse.

Below is Lewis Acker's stone house, built in a small bay. He was an American whaler, settled on Stewart Island around 1836, an exceptionally strong man who built the house himself using local stone and clay mortar. His Maori wife and him raised 9 children. How did they manage to squeeze into so small a space? By building bunk beds, five tiers high, reaching right up to the ceiling.

Look at how transparent the water is:

And here is the last walk, to Ryan's Creek.

More ferns (yes, I am getting addicted...):

10 days ago, the temperature was too hot for me in Kaikoura but, here, I am happy to stay around the stove in the evening...

Already time to fly back to the South Island, after a last view on the bays around which I walked during the last days.
